What actually dictates lifespan

For the pre-filters: the feed water's workload. A sediment cartridge on clear municipal water loafs; the same cartridge on a well with fine silt works constantly. A carbon block on lightly chlorinated water lasts; on heavily chloraminated water its capacity spends down faster. Usage volume matters too — a family of six making coffee, ice, and dinner from the RO faucet pushes more gallons through every stage than a retired couple. Lifespan is workload divided into capacity; nothing more mysterious.

For the membrane: what the pre-filters let through. Membranes rarely die of old age; they die of exposure. The three killers: chlorine and chloramine (chemical attack on the membrane material — this is why an exhausted carbon pre-filter quietly becomes a membrane-replacement bill), hardness scaling (calcium and magnesium concentrating at the membrane surface exactly where the separation process crowds them), and particulate fouling when sediment protection falls behind.
