Short answer: on a Clack WS1, including the WS1CI, Error 102 means what the WS1 service manual says: "E2, Err-1002, Err-102 = control valve motor ran too short and was unable to find the next cycle position and stalled." The phrase "unexpected stall" comes from two other places. Clack's manual for the larger WS2H, WS2HF and WS3 valves lists "1002: Unexpected Stall, Main Drive." And a distributor's Clack error chart uses "unexpected stall detected" for a different code, 202. Either way, the WS1 fix list is the same, and the full 102 walkthrough is here.
I wrote this page because techs keep asking me whether they're looking at two different faults. You're not. You're looking at one fault with two vocabularies, plus a neighbour code that gets mixed in.
Who uses which wording
| What a new dealer needs | WS1 family (what you're probably holding) | Other valves and charts | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Code E2 / Err 102 / Err 1002 | 'Control valve motor ran too short and was unable to find the next cycle position and stalled.' WS1 and WS1.25 service manual, same wording in the WS1.5/WS2 manual. | Not the WS2H/WS3 wording. Those larger valves list 1002 as 'Unexpected Stall, Main Drive' — same idea, different valve family, different manual. | WS1 |
| The phrase 'unexpected stall' | Does not appear in the WS1 manuals for 102. Our own E2 page uses the word 'stall' in its title because that's the plain-English symptom; the manual's wording is 'ran too short … and stalled.' | Clack's WS2H/WS2HF/WS3 manual: 1002 Unexpected Stall, Main Drive. A distributor chart: 'UNEXPECTED STALL DETECTED' for code 202. | Other |
| Code 202 | Not listed in any WS1 manual. | Distributor chart only: the control backs off and tries again. If the retry works, a 202 is logged and the valve keeps running. If it fails, a 102 is logged and the valve enters error mode. | Other |
| 'WS1-CI error 102' specifically | The CI programming manual has no error-code table of its own; its error screen says to contact the OEM and points to the service manual. That table covers WS1 valves generally (it only singles out TC) and has no CI-specific wording. | No document I've seen uses 'unexpected stall' for a WS1CI. | WS1 |
| What to do about it | Four causes, one fix list — see below. | Same four. The wording changes; the piston doesn't. | Depends |
Filter by column to see just the WS1 wording or just the other sources.
So if your display says 102, 1002 or E2 on a WS1, ignore the vocabulary argument and go to the causes. If it says 202, that's a warning the control recovered from; log it and watch for a 102 to follow.
Clack's four causes for 102 on a WS1
The service manual's item for E2 / 102 / 1002 lists four, with a fix for each:
- Foreign material lodged in the control valve. Pull the piston and seal/stack and inspect.
- Mechanical binding. Check the piston and seal/stack, the reduction gears, and the drive bracket and main drive gear interface.
- Main drive gear too tight. Loosen it.
- Improper voltage delivered to the PC board. Verify the voltage before you blame anything mechanical.
After any fix, resync: NEXT and REGEN together for 3 seconds, or disconnect power at the PC board for 5 seconds and reconnect. What a reset does and doesn't do.
A field note on the order: I check voltage second, not fourth. A weak transformer makes a healthy motor stall under load, and it looks exactly like binding until you put a meter on it. Clack lists voltage last; I don't.
Questions I get on this one
Is Clack error 102 an "unexpected stall"? On a WS1, Clack's wording is "motor ran too short and was unable to find the next cycle position and stalled." "Unexpected Stall, Main Drive" is the 1002 wording on WS2H, WS2HF and WS3 valves. A distributor chart uses "unexpected stall" for code 202.
What does error 102 mean on a WS1CI? The CI manual has no error table; the WS1 service manual's definition applies: the motor ran too short and stalled before it reached the next cycle position. There's no CI-specific wording.
What causes Clack error 102? Foreign material in the valve, mechanical binding, a main drive gear that's too tight, and improper voltage to the PC board.
What is Clack error 202? Not in the WS1 manuals. A distributor's chart describes it as a stall the control recovered from on retry; it's logged without stopping the valve, and if the retry fails a 102 is logged instead.
