Clack WS1 E3, Err 103 and 1003: the motor ran too long, not too short

E3 is the mirror image of E2 — the motor overran instead of stalling. What that points at, and why searching the bare code lands you on the wrong brand.

Before anything else: check whose valve you are actually looking at.

Search the bare string "E3" alongside "water softener" and you will get threads about other manufacturers' equipment — a Culligan unit throwing its own E3, with a fix path built around an empty brine tank, a float and an injector. None of that has anything to do with what E3 means on a Clack board. The number is not a standard; two manufacturers can and do use the same digit for unrelated faults.

That matters more here than most, because E3's neighbour reads almost identically and a tech skimming at the end of a long day can read one into the other.

What E3, Err 103 and 1003 actually mean

Clack's current WS1 and WS1.25 service manual defines E3 as the control valve motor having run too long and been unable to find the next cycle position.

Set that beside E2, which is the motor having run too short and stalled. Same sentence structure, same failure to arrive, opposite mechanics:

The distinction changes where you look first. E2 means something physically stopped the piston short. E3 means the motor kept turning and the board never got its confirmation.

And note what is missing from that table: there is no "E4." On current WS1 boards the letter forms stop at E3, and Err 104 has no two-digit equivalent at all. E4 appears in the 2008 service manual for the larger WS1.5, WS2 and WS2L valves — a different, now-superseded family — where it meant the same thing as today's Err 104. If someone hands you "E4" on a WS1, they are quoting an old document about a different valve.

Why "too long" is a signal problem as often as a muscle one

The WS1 has no cams and no limit switches. An optical sensor reads a reflective coating applied to one of three identical reduction gears in the drive assembly, and the board counts reflected pulses as that gear turns. Each cycle position has a defined pulse count.

The manual puts motor failure at the top of the E3 cause list, and that is fair — a motor that has lost torque runs without getting anywhere. But the same symptom appears when the count never arrives for reasons that have nothing to do with the motor: the coated gear not turning with the drive, a coating fouled so the sensor gets no clean pulse, a gear train not properly meshed.

That is why the drive bracket is on the manual's own list. A bracket not fully snapped in lets the motor spin without carrying the piston through its full travel — which reads as a timeout because mechanically it is one.

Err 104 is the same "ran too long" symptom but specifically while returning home — and home is found a different way, by sensing the motor current rise at the mechanical stop. Two sensing methods, two codes, one identical-looking symptom at the panel.

What to check, in order

  1. Read the actual digit off the panel yourself. Not what the customer texted, not what a search result assumed. E2 and E3 are one character apart and point opposite directions.
  2. Resynchronise. Hold NEXT and REGEN together for three seconds, or disconnect at the PC board for five seconds. If it clears and stays clear through a manual regeneration, log it and move on.
  3. Watch it try. Put it into a manual advance with the cover off and watch the drive turn. A motor spinning freely while the piston barely moves tells you something the code cannot.
  4. Confirm the drive bracket is fully snapped in and the gear panel seated — the manual's own third cause, and the cheapest to check.
  5. Inspect the gears and the reflective coating. Missing teeth, or a coating fouled or worn, breaks the pulse path while everything still looks like it is working.
  6. Check the motor connector and harness for corrosion or a loose crimp; a marginal connection reads to the board exactly like a slow motor.
  7. Motor and board last, once everything upstream is clean.

What it usually isn't

It usually isn't the board, and reaching for one first is the expensive mistake here — it is the only part in this fault that costs real money, and the code points at the drive train before it points at electronics.

And be careful what you are reading. Genuine installer discussion of this code is scarce; most of what a search surfaces is retailer copy, some of it about someone else's equipment entirely. The order above is built from the manufacturer's documentation, not from a distribution of confirmed root causes — that distribution is not publicly available, and anyone presenting one is guessing.

Rebuild or replace

E3 is usually the cheaper call of the three, because the parts it points at are the cheap ones.

Typical listed online pricing, not dealer cost: a drive motor assembly runs about $27, and the current drive bracket and gear panel assembly about $22. Replace both and you are around $49 in parts. If the board genuinely is the problem, a five-button metered PC board runs about $132 — the expensive item in this fault, which is exactly why it should be confirmed rather than assumed. Even stacking motor, bracket and board together you are under $180, against roughly $430–$551 for a complete WS1 control valve depending on configuration.

Labour is lighter than an E2 too — the drive assembly is more accessible than the full piston stack. Replace the valve only on a repeat drive-train failure on an old unit, or if you find corrosion or heat damage around the motor mount, which says something else is stressing that assembly and a new motor will not last either.

Making it a one-trip call

Stock the motor and the drive bracket together. A worn gear train is often what strained the motor that just failed, and replacing one without the other invites the same code back on a warranty visit. Confirm board button count and version before you roll — WS1 boards are not universal across variants.

While the cover is off, check the wiring harness and connector pins, and on metered units the turbine and meter cable. Both are free once you are in there, and both produce timing symptoms that look drive-related.
